Why Continuing Medical Education (CME)

Change is the only constant and upskilling in every profession is a must. How does life-long learning work in a profession that saves lives each day or needs critical thinking at every step? This is where Continuing Medical Education (CME) comes in.

The purpose of Continuing Medical Education (CME) is to facilitate life-long learning among physicians so that their practices may reflect the best medical care for their patients. The goal of CME is to help physicians enhance their performance in practice. All involved in the CME enterprise – educators, meeting planners, faculty, authors, speakers, accredited providers, supporters, and the physician learners themselves – are responsible for fulfilling this goal.

The Standards for Integrity and Independence in Accredited Continuing Education are designed to ensure that accredited continuing education serves the needs of patients and the public, is based on valid content, and is free from commercial influence.

The Standards were released in December 2020, replacing the Standards for Commercial Support: Standards to Ensure Independence in CME Activities.
