New Student Guide

1. Before you arrive

Below is the checklist for you to clear before you start the process of enrollment at BIMS.

  • Seat Deposit

    To confirm your seat at BIMS, you must pay a seat deposit within 14 days of your application. Beyond that, there is no guarantee a seat will be reserved for you. This deposit is non-refundable and can be paid through the BIMS application portal.

  • Housing & Transportation Form:

    To select your housing preference, visit our housing page.

  • Flight plan and student travel form
    Plan your arrival based on the academic calendar for different sessions. On the application portal, you will find a Travel Detail Form where you will enter your flight information. 

  • Passport and Visa:
    For entry into Jamaica, students from most countries will need a valid passport and visa. For visa requirement check xxxxx. Passports must have validity for at least six months after the expected date of travel. US and Canadian citizens need a valid passport but do not require a visa. US green card holders will get visa on arrival and will have to show a passport from their country of origin and their US green card.

  • Immunization Record
    For registration for classes you must fill in the immunization record form which is available on the application portal. This form must be signed by your physician before it is uploaded. Carry additional copy of this record.

  • Online Registration
    Register online through BIMS portal with the username and password sent to you by email

2. Immigration & Travel Information

  • Passport
    Citizens from the US and Canada do not require a visa for entry into Jamaica but need a valid passport. Citizens of other countries require a valid passport and visa to enter the country. The passport should have a validity of at least six months from the date of travel.

  • Immigration Letter

    Once you have filled in the Travel Detail Form available on the application portal, we will send you an immigration letter via email. You will need to present a printed copy of this letter, along with your acceptance letter, for entry into the country.

  • Spouse Travel

    Those of you who wish to bring your spouse along will need to procure a visa from the Immigration Department after showing a notarized marriage license certificate.

  • Family Employment

    Family members of students who wish to work in the country will require a permit from the government.

  • Driver’s License

  • Air Travel
    You must have a return ticket for entry into the country

  • Luggage

    Check with your airline about luggage restrictions. Make sure your bags are labeled with your details.

  • Shipping

    If you have excess luggage, you can ship your belongings through air cargo as an alternative.

3. Books and Laptop

All reading material will be provided to you by BIMS so you need not carry or buy anything. Our libraries offer easy access to your recommended course books plus we will also provide links to supplemental texts.

  • Valid passport and with a minimum six-month validity after the date of travel.

  • School Supplies

    At BIMS campus, you will get all the needed school supplies. However, if you wish, you may carry the following:

    • Blood-pressure cuff
    • Medical stethoscope
    • Pen torch
    • Reflex hammer
    • Eye charts
    • Tuning forks
    • Wristwatch with seconds (for pulse monitoring)

  • Technology

    • Windows laptop/Apple MacBook and/or Tablet
    • Cell phone, spare chargers and batteries, headphones, etc.
    • Router
    • Surge-protector strip with 5–7 outlets

  • Clothing
    Students need to have the following clothing items with them:

    • White coat
    • Scrubs
    • A few sets of formal clothing for both men and women
    • Dress shoes
    • Closed shoes for labs
    • Jackets/sweaters/hoodies for the classroom
    • Clothing for the gym and outdoors

  • Healthcare/Hygiene
    You will find most of the following healthcare items on campus for purchase but you may also bring them with you:

    • First-aid kit
    • Prescription medication
    • Over-the-counter medications
    • Sunscreen and bug repellents
    • Toothbrushes and toothpaste
    • Shampoo
    • Personal hygiene items
    • Lubricating eye drops
    • Shavers (with extra blades for manual)
    • Nail clippers
    • Scissors
    • Shower slippers
    • Extra contact lenses and lens solution
    • Spare eyeglasses

  • Miscellaneous Items
    You will need to have the following items when you move into your accommodation. Some can be purchased on campus. Note that your accommodation will not provide linens so you must be prepared:

    • Pillow and pillowcases
    • Bedsheets
    • Blankets and comforters
    • Mattress protector
    • Towels and washcloths
    • Disinfectant wipes
    • Shower curtain
    • Reusable water bottles
    • Umbrella
    • Flashlight
    • Plastic hangers
    • Duct tapes
    • Weighing scale
